Gijang County in Busan Distributes 950 Units of In-House Produced Seaweed Seeds to Local Fisheries
Achievements of the "Gijang-Style Seaweed Seed Production Research"
Supporting Fishermen with High-Quality, High-Density Seeds
Gijang County (Governor Jung Jongbok) recently distributed 950 units of seaweed seeds, produced in-house as part of the "Gijang-Style Seaweed Seed Production Research," to local fishing sites from the Fisheries Resources Research Center.
This year, the research center received 30 million won in project funding from the Kori Nuclear Power Plant in July and has been conducting indoor growth induction research, focusing on shortening the transplantation period for seaweed and improving seed quality. As a result, the center succeeded in producing high-density seaweed seeds, which are highly preferred by fishermen.
Additionally, to improve the traits of Gijang seaweed, fishermen directly selected Gijang-cultivated parent seaweed and crossbred them with both wild and farmed parent seaweed. The resulting seeded seaweed was cultivated and managed indoors until October. Afterward, the seaweed was transplanted offshore within three weeks, securing healthy seeds suitable for full-scale cultivation. Distribution was completed after a demand survey, in time for the local fishermen’s seeding period.
The research center plans to monitor the cultivation status by sea area for the distributed seeds until harvest and gather feedback from the field to reflect in future research for producing superior seeds.

Governor Jung Jongbok stated, "Although fishermen faced significant difficulties in cultivating seaweed this year due to adverse weather conditions during the seeding period, I hope the achievements of the research center will be of some help. We will continue to develop high-quality seeds and do our utmost to increase the income of local fishermen."
