Hwaseong, Siheung, and Yangpyeong Selected as Top Local Governments in "Clean Gyeonggi Initiative"
Hwaseong, Siheung, and Yangpyeong in Gyeonggi Province have been selected as the top local governments in this year's "Clean Gyeonggi Initiative City and County Evaluation."
Since 2019, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government has selected and awarded the top-performing local governments among 31 cities and counties in the province. The evaluation is based on presentations of best practices for reducing municipal solid waste, as well as assessments of 11 indicators, including the reduction of direct landfill disposal at the metropolitan landfill site.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Government will provide 40 million won to each of the three top-performing cities and counties, 30 million won to each of the excellent cities and counties, and 20 million won to each of the encouragement awardees. The allocated funds can be used for projects in the resource circulation sector, such as reducing the amount of municipal solid waste generated, increasing recycling rates, and raising public awareness about municipal solid waste disposal.
Cha Seongsu, Director-General for Climate, Environment and Energy at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, stated, "Based on this year's evaluation results, we plan to continuously identify outstanding policies to foster a circular economy. The provincial government and local governments will work together to reduce municipal solid waste."
