The 4th Hallym Science Concert was attended by over 200 participants, including Choi Yanghee, President of Hallym University, Chuncheon Mayor Yuk Donghan, citizens, faculty, and students. Citizens who could not attend in person also participated through a live YouTube broadcast, making the event a platform to present both technological and ethical roadmaps for how AI can contribute to human happiness.
For the first session, themed 'Safe AI: A Sustainable AI Ecosystem,' Kim Myungjoo, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Safety Research Institute, delivered a lecture. The second session, 'Healthy AI: Personalized Medicine with AI,' was presented by Shin Sooyong, Director of the Advanced Research Institute at Kakao Healthcare. In the opening session on 'Safe AI,' Kim Myungjoo addressed pressing debates in the AI era, including the misuse of AI, the copyright dilemma surrounding AI-generated creations, and the phenomenon of AI replacing human relationships.
Kim Myungjoo pointed out, "As general-purpose AI becomes deeply embedded in daily life, issues such as AI bias, data contamination, and the spread of deepfakes or false information through AI misuse are no longer distant concerns." She emphasized the importance of core principles to ensure fairness, transparency, safety, and accountability in AI systems, as well as the need for citizens to develop AI literacy.
In the subsequent 'Healthy AI' session, Shin Sooyong explained that medical AI is expected to greatly advance precision medicine by comprehensively analyzing an individual's genomic information, hospital medical records, and daily health-related lifestyle data.
He stated, "While traditional medicine has relied on treatment based on the average patient, AI can learn the characteristics of each individual to provide personalized diagnosis, treatment, and management." He highlighted specific roles and advancements in medical AI, such as early lung cancer detection through imaging AI, personalized coaching via lifestyle management AI, and the discovery of new therapeutics through drug development AI.
Following the lectures, a comprehensive discussion and Q&A session with all speakers provided an opportunity for citizens to resolve scientific questions and engage in in-depth conversations about the future of AI. In addition to the lectures, a special performance by the Chuncheon Municipal Korean Traditional Music Orchestra and other diverse programs blending science and art enriched the concert experience.
President Choi Yanghee remarked, "Through this concert, we have confirmed that AI technology can become a warm companion that makes the lives of all citizens safer and healthier, extending beyond the boundaries of the university." He added, "I hope Hallym University's intellect continues to meet the local community, creating new value through education."
