With the opening of the long-awaited public postpartum care center in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, mothers in the southern region of Chungcheongnam-do no longer need to travel to other areas for childbirth.

Nonsan City’s public healthcare system for postpartum care, established to create a “city that is ideal for giving birth and raising children,” is now fully operational.

On November 13, Nonsan City held the opening ceremony for “Chungnam Nonsan Public Postpartum Care Center Byeolbit.” After a two-week trial run starting on November 19, the center will officially begin operations in December.

As the first public postpartum care center in the southern region of Chungcheongnam-do, “Byeolbit” aims to build a public healthcare support system that connects pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery, while also preventing local mothers from having to give birth outside the region.

The center was constructed with a total project cost of 12.4 billion won (300 million won from the national government, 5 billion won from the provincial government, and 7.1 billion won from the city government). The facility is a three-story building with a total floor area of 2,285 square meters.

The center features 15 mother-and-baby rooms (including one for families with multiple children), a newborn room, a breastfeeding room, a family cafe, and various other spaces.

Additionally, infection prevention equipment such as an air sterilization and purification system, smart temperature and humidity control, and negative pressure facilities have been installed to ensure safety at the level of a specialized medical institution.

Individual cameras have been set up in the newborn room, allowing parents to check on their babies at any time.

The usage fee is set at 1.82 million won for two weeks-about half the price of private centers. Low-income families and households with multiple children can receive up to a 50% discount. Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, starting from 2 p.m. on Monday through Thursday of the first week of each month, two months prior to the expected delivery month.

Mayor Baek Seonghyeon stated, “The public postpartum care center Byeolbit marks the starting point for Nonsan as a city that embraces children,” adding, “If the number of births increases and 15 rooms become insufficient, we will actively consider expanding the facility.”

He also emphasized, “We will continue to strengthen the environment so that childbirth and childcare can take place safely within the local community.”
