View original imageThis forum was co-hosted by Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and Taebaek City, and organized by Gangwon Domin Ilbo Co., Ltd. More than 500 participants, including experts, business representatives, and citizens, attended the event, demonstrating high interest.
During the opening ceremony, key guests expressed their hopes for the success of the economic development project, and all attendees took part in a hand placard performance embodying the vision of "Taebaek, a Carbon-Free Clean Energy Hub City." Mayor Lee Sangho then personally presented the current progress and future vision of Taebaek City's economic development initiatives, reaffirming the city's commitment to transitioning to clean energy.
In the subsequent "Clean Methanol Cluster Project: Strategies for Each Stage of the Business Cycle" session, experts from various fields delivered in-depth presentations.
Kim Kyungnam, Ph.D., from the Environmental Research Division of the Gangwon Research Institute, introduced the current status of the forest and timber cluster project and proposed strategies for supplying raw materials for clean methanol production.
Jang Bongjae, President of the Korea Clean Methanol Industry Association, highlighted trends in the global clean methanol market, strategies for industrial activation, and emphasized Taebaek City's strategic position amid rising demand for clean energy due to strengthened international environmental regulations.
Shin Deokcheol, Team Leader of the Industrial Regulation Innovation Team at Gangwon Technopark, presented administrative support measures for revitalizing the clean methanol cluster project, such as utilizing special regulatory zones and proposing policies to attract investment. Strategies to strengthen industrial competitiveness through regulatory innovation were also discussed.
In particular, a Q&A session involving both citizens and experts was held, where lively discussions took place on the practical challenges of the clean methanol industry and region-specific development strategies.
