Ministry of Science and ICT Hosts '2025 Bio Future Forum'
Discussing Advanced Bio R&D and Institutional Innovation

Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a new turning point for innovation in the bio industry. On November 12, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the '2025 Bio Future Forum' at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul, where participants discussed advanced research and development as well as policy directions through the convergence of AI and biotechnology.

Now in its 11th year, the Bio Future Forum is a flagship policy event hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and organized by the National Biotechnology Policy Research Center at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. Each year, the forum identifies key issues and policy agendas in the bio sector.

The theme of this year's forum was 'B.U.I.L.D. AIxBio: Completing the Bio Future.' Discussions focused on how AI technology is transforming the paradigm across bio research and industry, and how it can create new growth engines.

In his keynote speech, Naver Healthcare Research Institute Director Na Gunho emphasized, "AI is no longer just an auxiliary tool; it will become both the architect and experimental partner in bio research." In the subsequent sessions, Kim Wooyeon, Professor of Chemistry at KAIST; Hwang Daehee, Professor of Biological Sciences at Seoul National University; Jung Junyoung, Principal Researcher at CJ CheilJedang BIO Research Institute; and Lee Jaehun, Professor of Law at Sungshin Women's University, participated in discussions on the current status of AI-bio convergence research and the industrial and institutional challenges it faces.

During the panel discussion, the Director of Advanced Biotechnology at the Ministry of Science and ICT and the presenters engaged in in-depth dialogue on topics such as regulatory relaxation for AI-bio convergence research, standardization of data utilization, and the creation of a public-private collaborative ecosystem.

At this forum, the Ministry of Science and ICT awarded commendations to 11 individuals who have contributed to the advancement of bio research and development and policy. The recipients included researchers and experts who have achieved outstanding results in areas such as establishing national bio strategies, commercializing technologies, and fostering international cooperation.

Kim Sungsoo, Director General for R&D Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "The convergence of AI and biotechnology will fundamentally change the paradigm of bio research and development and further strengthen the industry's innovation capacity." He added, "The government will make every effort to help Korea emerge as a global leader in biotechnology by establishing an AI-bio convergence ecosystem and reinforcing the institutional foundation."
