Natural Foods, Not Expensive Supplements, Are Key
Popcorn, Dried Fruit, Beans, Nuts, and Kefir Recommended

With growing interest in gut health and immune system management, the probiotic supplement market is experiencing rapid growth. However, a specialist doctor in the UK emphasizes that "the answer to gut health is not in a bottle of supplements, but on your plate." Natural foods that are rich in dietary fiber are said to be much more effective in maintaining the balance of gut microbiota than expensive supplements.

According to the BBC on November 5 (local time), British specialist Alexander Van Tulleken stated in a column that "you can maintain a healthy gut without consuming expensive probiotic products or probiotic snacks." He explained, "Gut microbiota are involved in far more than just digestion-they play a broad role in immune response, sleep, mood, and overall health," and advised that "a variety of natural foods, especially a fiber-rich diet, is essential for a balanced microbial environment."

Van Tulleken also provided practical dietary tips for gut health. The first is to eat popcorn instead of potato chips. Popcorn is made from whole grains, making it high in fiber and less processed, which provides nourishment for beneficial bacteria. Especially when popcorn is prepared without sugar or butter, it is lower in calories and more filling than potato chips, making it a suitable 'healthy snack alternative.'

He also recommended that those with a sweet tooth choose dried fruits instead of candy. Dried apricots, raisins, and dates contain natural sugars, vitamins, and fiber, satisfying both sweetness and nutrition. Van Tulleken explained, "This is the easiest way to reduce refined sugar while still enjoying sweetness."

Van Tulleken emphasized that consuming beans such as lentils and chickpeas is also beneficial for gut health. Beans are rich in prebiotic fiber, which helps the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, and are high in protein, making them a good alternative for those looking to reduce meat consumption.

He also advised eating nuts without added salt or sugar, as they provide healthy fats and fiber without unnecessary additives. For an alternative to ice cream, he recommended kefir (a fermented milk drink) and frozen berries.

"There Is No Miracle Supplement... Natural Foods Are the Answer"

Van Tulleken stressed that "above all, a balanced, natural food-based diet is the most important for gut health." He stated, "There is no clear evidence that health supplements or probiotic-related products are effective," and asserted, "I believe that buying products that promise miraculous effects, such as probiotic drinks or probiotic powders, is a waste of money."
