Praised for Raising Awareness and Understanding
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (President Lee Heeseung, KIOST) announced that its specialized book was selected in the natural sciences category of the "2025 Sejong Books Support Program - Academic Section," as announced by the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea on October 31.
This book, which documents research conducted after the Hebei Spirit oil spill, received high praise for its meticulous analysis of the Taean oil spill and for raising awareness and understanding of the incident.
The book presents the results of 12 years of research by KIOST scientists, who conducted long-term monitoring of the environmental impact of oil pollution and worked on developing marine environmental restoration technologies at the site of the Hebei Spirit oil spill, which occurred off the coast of Taean County, Chungcheongnam-do, in 2007, through 2019.
To promote a culture of reading, the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea operates the "Sejong Books Support Program." This year, a total of 353 books in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, and technical sciences were selected from among domestic academic and general interest books, including 11 titles in the natural sciences category.
The selected book is scheduled to be distributed to libraries of all levels, social welfare facilities, humanities centers, and Korean cultural centers abroad nationwide between January and February 2026.
