Groundbreaking for Phase 2 of Incheon-daero General Road Conversion... Completion Targeted for 2030
On November 3, Incheon City held a groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 2 of the general road conversion project on the former Gyeongin Expressway section (now Incheon-daero), where road improvement work is underway.
The Incheon-daero General Road Conversion Phase 2 Project is an urban restructuring initiative aimed at transforming Incheon-daero into a road focused on citizen communication and revitalizing the old downtown area. The project involves upgrading a 5.64-kilometer section from Juan Industrial Complex Overpass to Seo-Incheon Interchange into a general road and an underground roadway, while also creating a central green space. The total project cost is 822.2 billion won, with completion targeted for 2030.
The Incheon-daero General Road Conversion Project entails demolishing retaining walls and soundproof barriers along the 10.45-kilometer section from the Incheon starting point to Seo-Incheon Interchange of the former Gyeongin Expressway, which has divided the city center of Incheon for over 50 years. The plan includes creating parks, green spaces, and leisure areas in the center of the road. In 2019, the city converted this section from an expressway to a general road and named it "Incheon-daero" as part of its urban regeneration efforts.
The first phase of the Incheon-daero General Road Conversion Project (Incheon starting point to Juan Industrial Complex Overpass), covering 4.81 kilometers, is currently undergoing retaining wall demolition work, with completion targeted for 2027.
