Ken Griffey Jr. Faces Rising Sun Flag Controversy... Seo Kyung-duk Demands Deletion
Professor Seo: "Posted Photo Wearing Rising Sun Flag Headband and T-shirt"
"Must Ensure the Rising Sun Flag Is Never Used Again by Educating on Its Historical Background"
Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women's University revealed that he sent a protest message regarding Major League Baseball (MLB) 'legend' Ken Griffey Jr. posting a photo on social media wearing clothing and a headband featuring the Rising Sun Flag. Professor Seo stated that this act "reminds Asian fans of the horrors of war." The post in question has since been deleted.
On November 3, Professor Seo wrote on his social media, "Over the weekend, netizens informed me, and upon checking, I found that Ken Griffey Jr. had openly posted a photo of himself wearing a headband and T-shirt with the Rising Sun Flag pattern on his social media."
Professor Seo said that he immediately sent a protest direct message (DM) to Ken Griffey Jr. He explained, "I informed him that the Rising Sun Flag was the symbol that Japan used at the forefront when invading various Asian countries, including during the Pacific War, and that it represents Japanese militarism and imperialism."
He added, "This post is an act that reminds many Asian fans who admire you of the horrors of war," and stated that he demanded the deletion of the post and measures to prevent recurrence.
Ken Griffey Jr. was a superstar in MLB during the 1990s and is the first player to have his number permanently retired by the Seattle Mariners. According to Professor Seo, Ken Griffey Jr. deleted the post the day after receiving the protest message.

Professor Seo emphasized, "Rather than simply criticizing and expressing anger at global stars for using the Rising Sun Flag, it is important to accurately inform them of its historical background so that it is never used again." He also added, "Just as global pop stars like Adele and Maroon 5 corrected their use of the Rising Sun Flag after receiving protests in the past, we must continue to create such positive examples in the future."
