Japan-China Summit Scheduled for October 31 Afternoon; Rare Earths and Military Issues Expected on Agenda (Update)
First Meeting Since Prime Minister Takaichi Took Office
Bloomberg News reported that the Japanese government announced Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan and President Xi Jinping of China will hold a summit meeting on the afternoon of October 31.
This is expected to be the first Japan-China summit since Prime Minister Takaichi took office. The leaders of both countries are visiting Korea to attend the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit to be held in Gyeongju, South Korea.
The agenda for this summit is expected to include issues such as exports of resources including rare earths and semiconductor equipment, the resumption of China's imports of Japanese seafood, and the Taiwan issue. In addition, President Xi is anticipated to urge Prime Minister Takaichi to uphold Japan's previous commitments regarding historical and Taiwan-related matters.

Japanese media reported that Prime Minister Takaichi may raise concerns about the navigation of Chinese vessels near the Senkaku Islands (known in China as Diaoyu Dao) and the detention of Japanese nationals by Chinese authorities.
