The Women’s Safe Return Home Streets, for which Seongnam City received the award, are designated through consultations among local residents, 50 neighborhood offices, and the police station to ensure the safety of citizens returning home late at night. Since its launch in 2018, the project has established a total of 213 safe alleyways.
In these areas, various safety facilities have been installed, including: solar-powered (LED) road marker lights embedded in the pavement, solar wall lights that serve as illumination in places where streetlights cannot be installed, solar-powered signboards that provide guidance on calling 112 in emergencies, and logo projectors that display information such as the current location and jurisdictional police station onto the ground.
These facilities help illuminate the streets at night, providing psychological reassurance to citizens and raising awareness among potential offenders, thereby helping to prevent crime.
The city monitors these areas through the integrated CCTV control center on the 8th floor of City Hall, and has established a collaborative system among the public, private sector, and police, involving the Women-Friendly City Citizen Participation Group (a total of 47 members) and the local police station.
Seongnam City is evaluated as having strengthened its infrastructure as a women-friendly city, creating a safe environment that citizens can feel in their daily lives and establishing a sustainable crime prevention system.
