"Lowest Humidification Output" for Haan Corporation... "Up to 40-Fold Difference in Humidifier Maintenance Costs"
Humidification Capacity Highest in LG Electronics Model
Annual Maintenance Costs Differ by Up to 40 Times
Maximum Noise Level Ranges from 37 to 62 dB, Significant Variation Between Products
"All Products Require Regular Cleaning"
Humidifiers, which are frequently used during the fall and winter seasons, show significant differences in key performance areas such as humidification capacity and maintenance costs depending on the product.
On October 30, the Korea Consumer Agency announced the results of a test and evaluation conducted on 13 brands of humidifiers, selected based on a survey of 1,000 consumers who had purchased and used a humidifier within the past two years. The results showed that the hourly humidification capacity differed by up to 3.3 times between products. Among them, the LG Electronics (HY704RWUAB) model had the highest humidification capacity at 606 mL/h, while the HAAN-HD100A model from Haan Corporation had the lowest at 182 mL/h.
The coverage area also varied, with the LG Electronics (HY704RWUAB) model covering the largest area at 42.9 m³, and the HAAN-HD100A model from Haan Corporation covering the smallest at 12.9 m³.
Annual maintenance costs differed by up to 40 times between products. After comprehensively considering electricity bills and filter replacement costs, the study found that ultrasonic humidifiers cost between 4,640 and 6,420 won, steam humidifiers between 72,750 and 91,070 won, evaporative humidifiers between 5,330 and 108,330 won, and hybrid humidifiers between 15,780 and 189,290 won per year, resulting in a difference of more than 40 times between products.
The maximum noise level ranged from 37 to 62 dB, showing a significant difference between products. In particular, for steam humidifiers, the noise level increased to 52-55 dB during the initial boiling process, which should be considered when using the product during sleep. For reference, drum washing machines have an average noise level of 69 dB, microwave ovens average 57 dB, and kimchi refrigerators average 35-41 dB.
Some steam humidifiers require caution due to the risk of burns. Three steam humidifier models-Hanil Electric (GHSP-3300RR), Lezen (LZHD-H85), and Stena (STN100A)-emitted high-temperature steam at 99°C, and during the boiling stage, the water temperature inside the tank exceeded 100°C. There is a risk of burn injuries if hot steam is released or if hot water spills due to the product tipping over, so caution is advised.
All products were designed to require regular cleaning. The Korea Consumer Agency stated, "Depending on the humidification method, the risk of bacterial release, odors, and foreign substances may vary, so regular cleaning is essential for hygienic management." The agency added, "All products tested are designed so that the main components, including the water tank, can be easily disassembled for convenient cleaning."
No issues were found in terms of safety features such as electric shock protection, structural safety, or labeling for any of the products.

The Korea Consumer Agency advised consumers to choose a humidification method suitable for their space and usage, and to carefully compare humidification capacity, maintenance costs, noise levels, and price before making a purchase.
