Gwangju Police Confirm Two More Missing After Departures to Southeast Asia
A Total of Eight Cases Under Investigation, Including Incidents in Vietnam and Cambodia
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency is expanding its investigation after receiving a series of reports about individuals who lost contact after departing for Southeast Asia.
On October 27, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced, "With two additional reports of missing men who lost contact after leaving for Vietnam and Cambodia, we are now investigating the whereabouts of a total of eight individuals, including the previous six cases."
The newly reported cases involve a man in his 40s, identified as Mr. A (unemployed), who went missing after departing for Vietnam on May 25, and a man in his 20s, identified as Mr. B (company employee), who lost contact after leaving for Cambodia on September 26. Mr. A was reported missing at 1:00 p.m. on October 20, and Mr. B was reported at 8:59 a.m. on October 27 through requests for confirmation of non-returned nationals submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Previously, Mr. C, a man in his 20s who entered Cambodia via Thailand in June, was confirmed to have safely returned to Korea on October 22. The police plan to continue investigating the circumstances of Mr. C's departure and stay through mutual legal assistance procedures.
In the case of Mr. B, a man in his 20s whose whereabouts were requested to be confirmed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it has been verified that he is currently staying in Cambodia. His safety was confirmed via a phone call, but the local embassy is conducting additional verification.
The police also stated that a missing person report filed on September 24 was found to be a false report and the case has been closed.
