Gyeonggi Province Launches 6.1km Dongmuncheon Maintenance in Paju... Significantly Strengthening Flood Defense
From Seonyu-ri, Munsan-eup to Dongmun-ri, Beobwon-eup in Paju
48.4 Billion Won in Provincial Funding
Targeting Completion in October 2028
Gyeonggi Province announced on October 27 that it will launch the “Paju Dongmuncheon Local River Maintenance Project” to strengthen flood response capabilities for Dongmuncheon in Paju.
The maintenance project will cover a total length of 6.1 kilometers along Dongmuncheon, stretching from Seonyu-ri in Munsan-eup to Dongmun-ri in Beobwon-eup, Paju. The project includes 6.1 kilometers of embankment construction, 2.4 kilometers of embankment reinforcement and repair, and the installation of five bridges.
The total project cost is 48.4 billion won from the provincial budget, with completion targeted for October 2028.
The Dongmuncheon maintenance project began with a detailed design service and environmental impact assessment consultation in 2014, followed by value engineering (VE) advisory and review by the Gyeonggi-do Construction Technology Review Committee in 2016. In October 2020, a river construction implementation plan was officially announced, and compensation negotiations have been underway through 2025 to lay the groundwork for the full-scale project.
Kang Seongseup, Director of the Construction Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, “Through this maintenance project, the risk of Dongmuncheon overflowing during heavy rainfall will be significantly reduced, which will contribute to the safety and quality of life of local residents. We will work closely with Paju City and the local community to ensure the smooth progress of the project.”

Upon completion of this maintenance project, Gyeonggi Province plans to enhance the flood control capacity and stability of the entire 9.3-kilometer stretch of Dongmuncheon, including the 3.2-kilometer upstream section completed in 2024. The goal is to create an eco-friendly and safe river space, providing a secure environment for citizens to use with confidence.
