Yeongcheon City Team Achieves Remarkable 19-Medal Haul at National Sports Festival
6 Gold, 5 Silver, 8 Bronze Medals
Double Gold for Jae-woo Park and Song Dawon in Athletics
Yeongcheon City announced that its athletes, representing North Gyeongsang Province at the 106th National Sports Festival held in Busan from October 17 to 24, achieved outstanding results.
At this year’s event, the Yeongcheon City team fielded 50 athletes competing in six sports: athletics, volleyball, taekwondo, sepak takraw, judo, and baduk (Go).
The team won a total of 19 medals-6 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze-an increase of 7 medals compared to the previous competition, thus contributing significantly to the strong performance of the North Gyeongsang Province delegation.
In taekwondo, which was held as a preliminary event, the Yeongcheon City Hall taekwondo team stood out.
In the women's general division, Kang Mireu (-46kg) took first place, Seo Tanya (-62kg) finished second, and An Hyeyoung (-57kg) placed third.
In the men's general division, Lee Haengseok (-63kg), Lee Seunghun (-68kg), and Kim Jeongje (-80kg) all finished in third place, bringing home a total of 6 medals: 1 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze.
Yeongcheon City also demonstrated its strength in athletics.
Jae-woo Park (Yeongcheon City Hall), who competed as a national representative at this year’s Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, claimed double gold in the men's general division 5,000m and 10,000m. In the women's high school middle and long-distance events, Song Dawon (Yeongcheon Seongnam Girls' High School) set personal records in the 1,500m and 5,000m, also achieving double gold.
The women’s high school 4×400m relay team and the under-18 mixed 4×400m relay team both finished in second place.
In the men's high school division, Jang Junhyeok (Yeongdong High School) set a personal record to take first place in the 1,500m.
In the men's general division 3,000m steeplechase, Choi Jaekyung (Yeongcheon City Hall) finished second, and overall, the athletics team secured 8 medals: 5 gold and 3 silver.
In judo, students from Gyeongbuk Human Tech High School delivered outstanding performances.
In the individual events, Woo Youngsu (-73kg) finished second, while Jo Hyunwoo (-60kg) and Baek Junho (-81kg) each took third place.
In the under-18 team event, Woo Youngsu, Lee Hyeonseong, Baek Junho, and Lee Donggyu placed third, earning a total of 4 medals: 1 silver and 3 bronze.
Additionally, in the women’s high school sepak takraw division, Sunhwa Girls’ High School finished third, adding one more bronze medal.
