International Conference on the Maritime Silk Road to Open at Jeju National University on the 23rd
Theme: "From Tamna to East Asia"
Highlighting Joseon Naval Fortresses and Maritime Defense Systems
The National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage under the Cultural Heritage Administration announced on October 20 that it will hold the "International Conference on the Maritime Silk Road" together with the Jeju National University Museum at 10 a.m. on October 23 at the Inda Hall of Jeju National University.
This is a leading international academic event that has discussed the value and necessity of preserving maritime heritage, with domestic and international researchers participating annually since 2006.
This year's theme is "From Tamna to East Asia: The Historical Significance of the Jeju Sea and Maritime Defense Systems." The conference will begin with a keynote lecture by Professor Kim Dongjeon of Jeju National University, followed by six research presentations. Researcher Cho Yongcheol of the National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage will present on the achievements and future tasks of maritime relics investigations, focusing on "Research Achievements on Naval Fortresses of the Joseon Dynasty." Professor Moon Jiwon of Jeju National University will address "Maritime Disasters and Government Responses during the Late Goryeo and Early Joseon Periods."
Professor Kim Kidung of the Korea Air Force Academy will present "The Reorganization of Naval Fortresses in Jeolla Province during the Late Joseon Period," while researcher Lee Gangwon of Korea University will discuss "Reform Plans for the Gyeonggang Defense System in the 19th Century." International scholars include Xiao Chaiya from the Quanzhou Maritime Museum in China and Chikara Hidenori from the University of the Ryukyus, who will introduce cases of maritime defense in Ming Dynasty China and the Ryukyu Kingdom, respectively.
After the presentations, Professor Kang Bongryong of Mokpo National University will moderate a comprehensive discussion. Experts such as Jeon Youngjun, Director of the Jeju National University Museum, Professor Oh Sanghak of Jeju National University, and Ko Jaewon, Director of the Jeju Cultural Heritage Research Institute, are expected to participate.
On October 24, with support from the Jeju Archaeological Institute and the Jeju Cultural Heritage Research Institute, there will be field trips to maritime defense heritage sites in Jeju, including Hangpaduri Hangmong Historic Site, Myeongwol Fortress Site, and Aewol Yeondae.
