The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Climate Week is an international event held prior to the Conference of the Parties (COP), where over 5,000 participants from 198 countries, international organizations, and NGOs gather for high-level meetings, implementation forums, and agenda-specific sessions. It serves as a crucial preliminary platform for discussions to incorporate each country's climate agenda into the official COP agenda.
Previously, Yeosu City was selected as the final candidate site in a national competition among local governments, recognized for its experience in hosting international events such as the 2012 Yeosu World Expo, and for its leadership in climate action, including holding the nation's first Climate Protection Week since 2008 and promoting citizen-participatory climate policies.
Mayor Chung Kimyung stated, "Securing Climate Week is a strategic stepping stone that will directly demonstrate our capacity to host COP33 and will also be a significant opportunity linked to the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo. We will do our utmost to make Yeosu a leader in discussing a sustainable future with the world and to demonstrate our role as a city that takes action in the face of the climate crisis."
