Donald Trump, President of the United States, who has positioned himself as a 'peace mediator,' will attend the peace agreement signing ceremony between Thailand and Cambodia.
According to AFP and other sources on October 14, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced at a press conference that President Trump will attend the peace agreement signing ceremony between Thailand and Cambodia, which will take place during the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 26 to 28.
Minister Mohamad stated that President Trump is looking forward to witnessing Thailand and Cambodia sign the peace agreement.
In late July, Thailand and Cambodia engaged in clashes along their border, resulting in 43 deaths over five days. At that time, President Trump pressured both countries into a ceasefire by using the suspension of trade negotiations as leverage. The two nations agreed to a ceasefire at the end of July, mediated by Malaysia, which holds the ASEAN chairmanship this year.
However, tensions have continued, with several landmine explosions injuring Thai soldiers and sporadic skirmishes breaking out. In this context, on October 9, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul revealed that President Trump had sent a letter urging Cambodia to engage in peace talks and resolve the border dispute.
