Protests Over Immigration Raids Spread

Protests against immigration raids have intensified in Chicago after a federal immigration enforcement agent shot a U.S. citizen.


According to the New York Times and other U.S. media outlets, on the morning of the 4th (local time), a federal agent conducting an immigration raid in the southwestern area of Chicago shot and injured a driver who is a U.S. citizen.


Chicago police responded to the scene after receiving a report of the shooting, and the injured driver is in stable condition and not in life-threatening danger.


The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated, "A female driver armed with a semi-automatic handgun rammed and blocked a law enforcement vehicle, prompting the federal agent to fire at her."

The Department of Homeland Security identified the woman as Marimar Martinez, stating that she was released from the hospital and is now in FBI custody. The department also added that another driver, Anthony Ian Santos Luis, was involved in the collision and was arrested.


Anthony Luis's mother, Elizabeth Luis, said, "My son called me in the morning and said that federal agents had rammed his car and were shooting," adding, "When I rushed to the scene, an agent was detaining my son and said he was under arrest, but when I asked for the reason, they gave no answer."


News of the shooting further fueled protests over immigration raids. Hundreds of people gathered in the southwestern area of Chicago, where the incident occurred, to protest the intensified immigration enforcement efforts.
