Tsinghua University Tops Global Computer Science Rankings
Amid the Chinese government's push for technological advancement, Tsinghua University, one of China's most prestigious universities, has reached the top position in global computer science rankings.
Tsinghua University, which is also the alma mater of President Xi Jinping, is leading China's advanced technology sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI) and humanoid robotics, thanks to its extensive network and substantial investment in research and development.
According to Yonhap News Agency on October 4, citing the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP), Tsinghua University in Beijing recently ranked first in the 'CS Rankings,' a global ranking of computer science academic institutions.
In the CS Rankings, which are based on research papers presented at top academic conferences, Tsinghua University overtook Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, which had long held the lead in this field, to claim the number one spot.
Following Carnegie Mellon University, Chinese universities including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, and Peking University ranked third to fifth, respectively. This marks a shift from just a few years ago, when leading U.S. universities dominated the top positions. Now, universities from both the United States and Asia are more evenly represented at the top.
SCMP analyzed this trend by stating, "The remarkable rise of Chinese universities in a field once dominated by U.S. institutions demonstrates years of government investment and the close ties with China's rapidly growing technology companies."
Tsinghua University is drawing even more attention not only for its academic rankings and research output, but also for consistently producing startups and CEOs of leading global companies. In June this year, at a smart e-sports event held in Beijing, Tsinghua University won a fully autonomous 3-on-3 robot soccer match powered entirely by AI.
However, there are still areas where U.S. universities maintain a dominant position, particularly in core fields such as algorithms and cryptography within the CS Rankings.
In addition, in the world university rankings compiled by highly reputable institutions such as QS and THE, Chinese universities, including Tsinghua University, have not reached the very top tier. SCMP pointed out, "This suggests that global academic reputation still lags behind."
