Yeongwol County Successfully Holds Palheung Bridge Opening Ceremony... Expected to Serve as Gateway to Central Inland Region
According to Yeongwol County in Gangwon Province, the existing Palheung Bridge, which had repeatedly caused inconvenience to residents due to flooding during heavy rainfall in the upper regions, was designated as a disaster risk improvement zone on November 15, 2021. After carrying out maintenance work, the county held an opening ceremony for the bridge on October 1, 2025.
As the Palheung Bridge over the Han River, a national river, was submerged several times each year during the rainy season, the county has been working on the bridge since 2022 with a total budget of 20.4 billion won (50% funded by the national government), and has now completed the main construction process.
Through maintenance work on the 290-meter-long Palheung Bridge and the 350-meter-long access road, the county aimed to eliminate disaster risk factors. With 92% of the project completed, the main construction has been finished, ensuring a safe passageway for residents.
Going forward, the demolition of the old Palheung Bridge will begin in October, and the disaster risk improvement project for the Palheung Bridge is scheduled to be completed by December.

Kim Haewon, head of the Construction Division, stated, "Residents suffered from repeated flooding every year, which caused inconvenience in commuting. However, with the completion and opening of the main construction of the Palheung Bridge, the living conditions have improved through the establishment of social infrastructure. In the future, the new Palheung Bridge, as part of the expansion project for the Palgoe 2-ri rural road, is expected not only to improve accessibility to National Support Local Road Route 88, but also to serve as a gateway to the central inland region, connecting Yeongwol-Jecheon Expressway and extending to Yeongju City and Bonghwa County in North Gyeongsang Province, as well as Danyang County in North Chungcheong Province."
