Everything Is Mathematics!... Gyeongbuk Office of Education Builds Math Culture Center in Pohang
Former Gyeongbuk Science High School Site
Four-Story Building, 3,880 Square Meters
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jongshik) announced on September 26 that the Gyeongbuk Office of Education Math Culture Center, which was established to support student growth for the future and strengthen mathematics education, is undergoing its final inspections ahead of its opening ceremony scheduled for October 14.
The Math Culture Center has been built on the site of the former Gyeongbuk Science High School in Pohang, featuring four above-ground floors and a total area of 3,883 square meters. Together with the four regional mathematics experience centers currently operating in Andong, Sangju, Gyeongsan, and Chilgok, the center is expected to play a central role in mathematics education in Gyeongbuk Province.
With the theme "Everything is Mathematics," the Math Culture Center is designed so that people of all ages can easily and enjoyably engage with mathematics. During its pilot operation for nearby elementary and middle school students, the center received a positive response as students discovered the fun and value of mathematics through hands-on experiences, observation, and interactive activities.
The center’s floors are organized as follows: the first floor is dedicated to student clubs, research activities, and program spaces; the second floor features a mathematics play area for young children, a mathematics library, and a mathematics lounge; the third floor offers experiences in mathematics within future technology and art; and the fourth floor showcases mathematics in daily life and the history of mathematics. In particular, interactive exhibition content for the digital generation is a unique strength of the Math Culture Center.
Going forward, the Math Culture Center aims to serve not only as an exhibition and viewing space but also as a hub for spreading mathematics culture. It plans to operate a variety of activities such as curriculum-linked programs, group programs for schools, mathematics teaching aid rentals, and training sessions for teachers and parents.
