Sangju City Removes Overhead Power Lines from Downtown Skyline with Underground Cabling Project
Underground Cabling Completed for 1.95 km Section
Enhanced Urban Landscape and Pedestrian Safety Achieved Simultaneously
Sangju City has successfully completed the underground cabling project for 195 kilometers of major arterial roads in the city center after five years of construction. With this project, the overhead power lines that once filled the city skyline have disappeared, simultaneously improving both the urban landscape and pedestrian environment.
The project area covered key downtown sections, including from City Hall Intersection to Fashion Street (0.75 kilometers) and from Seomun Intersection to Hucheon Bridge (1.20 kilometers), with a total investment of 12.6 billion won. The project costs were equally shared between Sangju City and Korea Electric Power Corporation and telecommunications companies, each bearing 50% of the expenses.
Sangju City applied for the underground cabling project with Korea Electric Power Corporation in 2019, and in March 2020, signed an agreement with Korea Electric Power Corporation and telecommunications companies before commencing construction. The process of burying power and communication lines underground was carried out sequentially, and all work was completed in September this year with the removal of utility poles.
As a result of this project, the power lines and utility poles that once crowded the city center have disappeared, making the urban landscape noticeably cleaner. Not only have pedestrian safety and residents' satisfaction with daily life improved, but positive effects on local businesses are also anticipated.
Kang Youngseok, Mayor of Sangju City, stated, "I deeply thank the citizens for their patience during the construction period," adding, "We will continue to improve the urban environment to create a safer and more pleasant city."
