Gwangju Seogu District Gains Attention for Statistics-Based 'Alleyway Economy Revitalization' Model
Awarded Excellent Grade in the "Regional Statistics Policy Utilization Best Practices Contest"
Seogu District in Gwangju is gaining attention as a model for revitalizing local alleyway commercial districts based on regional statistics.
On September 23, Seogu District announced that it had been awarded an excellent grade in the "2025 Regional Statistics Policy Utilization Best Practices Contest," organized by the Honam Regional Statistics Office, for its case study titled "Establishing an Innovative Alleyway Commercial District Model in Seogu District through Data Analysis."
This contest was held to discover outstanding examples of utilizing regional statistics, raise awareness about their importance, and promote their adoption. It targeted 52 organizations, including local governments and research institutes in the Honam region.
Seogu District systematically identified the density of commercial districts by integrating and analyzing various types of data, including store information, commercial real estate data, card sales, and demographic statistics. Through this, the district prepared foundational policy data necessary for the designation of prospective alleyway-type shopping areas, and promoted policies to expand the number of Onnuri Gift Certificate affiliate stores, achieving tangible results in stimulating consumption and increasing sales.
In particular, the district received high praise for presenting a data-driven policy model that enhanced the self-sustainability of the local alleyway economy, even amid challenging economic conditions such as high inflation and high interest rates.
