Gwangju Office of Education Holds Forum to Explore Development Plans for Education Development Special Zones
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, together with the Gwangju City Government, held a "Forum on Exploring Development Plans for Education Development Special Zones" at the Kim Daejung Convention Center on the 22nd.
The forum was organized to review the first-year achievements of the pilot areas designated as Education Development Special Zones and to explore ways to establish policies for nurturing talent, employment and entrepreneurship, and improving settlement conditions.

View original imageThe event began with a special lecture by National Assemblyman Lee Geontae titled "The Crisis of Regional Disappearance: Finding Answers in Education," followed by a session sharing the achievements of the Education Development Special Zones, and a designated discussion chaired by Myung Jin, Chair of the Education and Culture Committee of the Gwangju City Council.
Participants in the discussion included Kim Seonseong, Principal of Gwangju High School; Kim Heesoo, Professor at the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology; Kim Seunghoon, Chair of the Gwangju Youth Committee; and Kim Eunju, President of the Gwangju School Steering Committee Association. The attendees discussed topics such as ▲ revitalizing autonomous public high schools 2.0 ▲ the first-year achievements and 2027 development strategies of the Education Development Special Zones ▲ youth settlement and regional coexistence ▲ innovative public education and enhanced care measures that parents can experience. This was followed by a Q&A session with citizens.
Kim Youngmoon, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Economy, stated, "Through the Education Development Special Zones, we will complete Gwangju's unique talent development ladder by linking the city's strengths in integrated care, artificial intelligence (AI), future vehicles, and other regional specialized industries with the Ministry of Education's education reform initiatives."
Superintendent Lee Jeongseon said, "Based on the achievements and limitations of the first year of the Education Development Special Zone pilot, we will supplement our policies to ensure official designation in 2027. We will create a special zone that connects the growth of each and every student to the strength of the region."

The Gwangju-style Education Development Special Zone is a system in which local governments, education offices, universities, local businesses, and public institutions collaborate to comprehensively support regional education innovation, talent development, and the creation of favorable settlement conditions.
