Yangsan City Presents Hwarang Military Merit Medal to Korean War Veteran’s Bereaved Family
On September 18, the city of Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, presented the Medal of Honor certificate and the Hwarang Military Merit Medal to Park Hyunggeun, the nephew of the late Corporal Park Muchi (a resident of Pyeongsan-dong), on behalf of the Minister of National Defense, in recognition of his distinguished service during the Korean War.

View original imageSince 2019, the Ministry of National Defense and the Army have operated the “Korean War Military Merit Medal Recovery Task Force,” implementing the “Korean War Military Merit Medal Recovery Project” to locate veterans and bereaved families who were awarded medals for their achievements during the Korean War but were unable to receive the actual medals and certificates due to the urgent circumstances of the battlefield.
The late Corporal Park Muchi, who served in the 36th Regiment of the 5th Division during the war, was recognized for his bravery in the battle of Hoengseong, Gangwon Province, where he fought valiantly against enemy attacks and was killed in action. Although he was selected to receive the Hwarang Military Merit Medal, he had not been able to receive the medal until now.
Park Hyunggeun, the nephew who attended the medal presentation ceremony, said, “I am grateful to everyone who worked to restore the honor of my uncle, who devoted himself to the nation, and I will cherish today’s honor.”
