Providing Practical Growth Opportunities for Gyeongsan Students

The kickoff briefing session for the "AI Computational Resource Sharing Open Source Project," jointly promoted by Gyeongsan Innovation Academy (42 Gyeongsan), the National Information Society Agency (NIA), and Kyungpook National University, was held on the afternoon of September 18, 2025, at the Universe Room of Gyeongsan Innovation Academy.

The event was attended by Lee Heonsu, Dean of 42 Gyeongsan; Lee Jaewon, Head of the AI-Cloud Technology Innovation Team at the National Information Society Agency; Professor Kwon Youngwoo from the College of IT at Kyungpook National University; as well as other officials and about 10 students from 42 Gyeongsan.

This project was designed to address the shortage of GPU computational resources, which has been identified as the biggest constraint in domestic artificial intelligence (AI) research and development.

Unlike global big tech companies, which own hundreds of thousands of GPUs, the total number of GPUs available in South Korea remains at only several thousand, leading to persistent challenges in the research field.

In response, 42 Gyeongsan, NIA, and Kyungpook National University plan to build a shared ecosystem accessible to everyone by developing technologies for efficient GPU resource sharing and utilization, and by releasing them as open source.

By the end of this year, they will launch a Github repository and release the first phase of open source code. They also plan to expand participation through regular online seminars and technology conferences.

Dean Lee Heonsu stated, "We expect that students at 42 Gyeongsan will be able to strengthen both their international competitiveness and practical capabilities by directly engaging in AI research and development in a self-directed learning environment, as well as by participating in global open source projects."
