Jinju City Promotes Space Industry Vitalization ... Holds 3rd Satellite Utilization Seminar
Strengthening Satellite Capabilities: Establishing Itself as a Leading Aerospace City
Building Industry-Academia-Government-Research Cooperation
Fostering Downstream and Other High Value-Added Sectors
Jinju City in South Gyeongsang Province, which has established itself as a leading city in aerospace by becoming the first local government in the country to successfully launch and operate a nanosatellite, announced on the 18th that it held the "3rd Jinju City Satellite Utilization Seminar" at the Asia Lakeside Hotel, actively promoting the revitalization of the space industry sector.
This event, hosted by Jinju City and co-organized by Gyeongnam Technopark and the Korea Association for the Advancement of Space Technology, was attended by over 100 industry-academia-research experts, including Roh Kyungwon, Deputy Commissioner of the Korea Aerospace Administration; Heo Gibong, Dean of the College of Aerospace at Gyeongsang National University; representatives from South Gyeongsang Province; the Korea Testing Laboratory; and domestic space companies. The seminar was held successfully with high participation.
This seminar, held for the third time following sessions in the second half of last year and the first half of this year, featured a variety of programs, including: lectures by satellite utilization experts; presentations on the operational achievements of JinjuSat-1B and the development status of JinjuSat-2; discussions on satellite utilization strategies for local governments; and sharing of satellite utilization cases in the corporate and public sectors. Through these activities, the event aimed to promote information exchange and network expansion among industry, academia, and research, and is expected to contribute to the activation of the space industry by strengthening satellite utilization capabilities, not only in the "upstream" sector but also in high value-added "downstream" areas.
In particular, the presentation by Kim Kyunghee, Center Director at the Korea Testing Laboratory, on "Operational Achievements of JinjuSat-1B and Development of JinjuSat-2" attracted significant attention from participants, as it provided a practical demonstration of the potential for satellite utilization by local governments.
On March 15, Jinju City became the first local government in the country to successfully launch the nanosatellite "JinjuSat-1B." Although the original mission was planned for three months, JinjuSat-1B continues to perform its mission normally, communicating four times a day, and has achieved the milestone of receiving more than 400 mission data transmissions to date. The follow-up satellite, JinjuSat-2, currently under development, will be equipped with a sensor capable of simultaneously detecting sea surface temperature and ocean color for the first time in Korea, and will be used to monitor the coastal waters of South Gyeongsang Province. The data produced will be shared with companies to help foster the downstream industry.
Cha Seokho, Deputy Mayor of Jinju City, stated, "This seminar is a meaningful occasion where industry, academia, research, and government come together to explore concrete cases and development strategies for satellite utilization. Based on our diverse research foundation, advanced infrastructure including space environmental testing facilities, and technological capabilities secured through nanosatellite development, Jinju City will actively foster the field of satellite utilization and further solidify its status as a leading aerospace city."
