Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced that it held an interim report meeting on the "Investigation of Coal and Anthracite Status and Establishment of Basic Plan for Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province" on September 17 at the conference room of the Gangwon Provincial University headquarters, as part of its efforts to foster industries utilizing coal and anthracite resources.

View original imageThis meeting was organized to review the research achievements made since the initial kick-off meeting and to further specify future tasks. Officials from the province and cities/counties, the research institution in charge, and advisory committee members attended to share interim research results, participate in a Q&A session, and gather feedback.
The main presentations focused on: ▲ progress of the coal and anthracite status investigation in abandoned mine areas and analysis of stockpile site characteristics; ▲ trends and outlook of related industries both domestically and internationally; ▲ current status of discovering projects to foster and support industries utilizing coal and anthracite; and ▲ plans for establishing a management system for anthracite and directions for economic feasibility analysis.
The meeting highlighted the need to lay the groundwork for utilizing coal and anthracite as industrial resources, with participants agreeing on the importance of institutional support and establishing an industrial foundation. In addition, they agreed to cooperate so that future research outcomes can lead to the discovery of alternative industries in abandoned mine areas and revitalize the local economy.
Son Changhwan, Director General of the Global Headquarters of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, stated, "This research project is an important process for comprehensively understanding the current status of coal and anthracite stockpiles and suggesting concrete directions for future industrial applications. In particular, we will prepare measures to utilize anthracite as raw materials in various fields such as new materials, construction, and environmental industries, so that it can be established as an alternative industry in abandoned mine areas."
