These vessels will be built at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje shipyard and delivered by the first half of 2029.
The large container ships ordered this time are capable of transporting 15,880 containers at once. Notably, they will be equipped with LNG dual-fuel engines as standard, and will be designed to the Ammonia DF Ready specification, allowing them to be converted to ammonia dual-fuel propulsion in response to increasingly stringent international environmental regulations.
This project will also feature, for the first time in the world, a Type-B LNG fuel tank designed for a pressure of 1.0 bar (1 bar equals the force exerted by a weight of about 10 tons on a 1 square meter area). By increasing the pressure from the existing 0.7 bar, LNG boil-off gas can be safely stored for longer periods, thereby enhancing both operational efficiency and environmental responsiveness. This also provides practical benefits for shipowners by reducing unnecessary gas flaring and penalty costs while docked at ports.
Previously, in March, Hanwha Ocean signed a contract for ultra-large container ships with Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen, making this the second contract with a Taiwanese company.
