Director Yoo Hongjun to Deliver Lecture on October 1: "Developing Attractive Cultural Products"
Special Lecture by Yoo Hongjun, Director of the National Museum of Korea
For Cultural Product Developers and the General Public
The National Museum of Korea will hold a special lecture titled "Museum Academy: Specialized Course" on the beauty and value of traditional culture at 3 p.m. on October 1 in the main auditorium of the National Museum of Korea. The event is open to cultural product developers and members of the general public interested in design.
The lecture, titled "The Beauty of Korean Craft: A Special Lecture for Cultural Product Developers," will be delivered by Director Yoo Hongjun. He will discuss the essence and characteristics of traditional culture, the potential for modern interpretation, and the practical value of traditional culture in cultural product development. Recently, interest in traditional culture has surged due to the popularity of the animation "K-Pop Demon Hunters," leading to a significant increase in both museum visitors and cultural product sales. In response, the National Museum of Korea planned this lecture to explore ways to develop attractive cultural products that preserve the context and meaning of tradition, and to provide practical support as an institution that holds original source materials.
Director Yoo Hongjun will begin the lecture by explaining the essential attributes of craft-utility and beauty. He will then discuss the harmony between practicality and form found in traditional crafts, the reinterpretation of traditional culture as a resource for the cultural industry, and its future-oriented value, all illustrated with a wealth of examples.
A museum official stated, "This special lecture is expected to provide deep insights and creative inspiration not only to field professionals and aspiring designers responsible for planning cultural products based on traditional culture, but also to interested members of the general public," adding, "It will be an opportunity to explore how tradition can be reborn in today's design language rather than remaining in the past."
The lecture will be held in person for up to 200 attendees, with seats available by advance reservation on a first-come, first-served basis. It will also be broadcast live online through the National Museum of Korea's YouTube channel.
The "National Museum of Korea Museum Academy" specialized courses are educational programs designed to train professionals in various museum-related fields. This particular lecture is part of the "Design and Cultural Industry" track and aims to answer the question, "How can our traditional culture, especially the museum's collections, lead the global K-culture industry?"
