View original imageOn September 15, Koo Yoonchul, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Strategy and Finance, announced that the current major shareholder threshold for the stock transfer capital gains tax would be maintained at 5 billion won.
The Ministry of Strategy and Finance stated that Deputy Prime Minister Koo made this announcement while attending the Chuseok Livelihood Stability Measures Party-Government Meeting that day, saying, "After comprehensively listening to opinions from the market and holding close discussions with the National Assembly, we have decided to maintain the current definition of major shareholders, taking into account the public's strong desire to revitalize the capital market."
He added, "Since announcing the tax reform proposal in July, there has been considerable deliberation regarding the normalization of taxation standards for major shareholders and the need to stimulate the capital market. The government will continue to do its utmost to support the growth of businesses and the national economy through the revitalization of the capital market and productive finance."
Previously, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance had proposed a tax reform plan that would lower the major shareholder threshold from 5 billion won to 1 billion won per stock.

In addition to this measure, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance stated that it will continue to pursue policies aimed at developing the capital market and enhancing corporate value, such as establishing a 150 trillion won National Growth Fund and supporting the introduction of Business Development Companies (BDCs).
