Chung Euisun Expresses Relief at Korean Workers' Return, Calls for Better System

Chung Euisun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, expressed relief upon hearing that the Korean workers who had been detained by U.S. immigration authorities are now on their way back home. He also emphasized that South Korea and the United States need to establish a better visa system.
On the 11th (local time), Chairman Chung made these remarks while attending the Automotive News event held in Detroit, USA. He stated, "Our government and the U.S. government are working closely together," adding, "I hope both governments will create a better system."

View original imageOn the 4th (local time), U.S. immigration authorities conducted a large-scale raid targeting undocumented workers at the Hyundai Motor-LG Energy Solution joint venture construction site in Savannah, Georgia. As a result of this operation, over 300 Koreans were arrested and detained. Following intergovernmental negotiations, more than 330 workers were released, and a chartered flight carrying them departed from Atlanta Airport and is scheduled to arrive at Incheon Airport this afternoon.
Chairman Chung said, "I was deeply concerned about that incident," stressing, "Our top priority is the safety of everyone involved in our business."
Despite this incident, Chairman Chung reiterated that the importance of the U.S. market and Hyundai Motor Group's investment commitment to the United States remain unchanged. He stated, "The United States is Hyundai Motor's largest and most important market," and added, "As an automaker, we want to contribute even more to the U.S. market."

He also expressed hope that the younger generation's interest in eco-friendly vehicles would continue from an environmental protection perspective. Regarding autonomous vehicles, he acknowledged that there are currently many variables to consider, making development challenging. However, he also noted that given the demand from younger people who are less enthusiastic about driving, there is significant market potential.
