World leaders have warned of the dangers of political violence following the killing of Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist known as a staunch supporter and close associate of U.S. President Donald Trump.
On September 11 (local time), Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), "I am shocked by the news of Charlie Kirk's murder," adding, "Political violence can never be justified for any reason, and all such acts threaten democracy." British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also wrote on X, "We must be able to debate openly and freely without fear," emphasizing, "There can be no justification for political violence."
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated on X, "This horrific murder is a wound to everyone who believes in democracy and freedom," and expressed condolences to Kirk's family, loved ones, and the American conservative community. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "He was killed for speaking the truth and defending freedom," adding, "He was a lion-like friend to Israel, bravely fighting against falsehoods and proudly defending Judeo-Christian civilization." Netanyahu also noted, "Just two weeks ago, I spoke with him and invited him to Israel, but sadly, that visit will no longer take place."
In the United States, figures from across the political spectrum condemned political violence in response to the incident, which is believed to have been a shooting motivated by political reasons. President Trump described the shooting as "a dark moment for America" in a post on Truth Social, stating, "The government will identify all those responsible for this brutal act and any other political violence." Former President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, former President George W. Bush, and former President Bill Clinton also joined in expressing their condolences and condemnation.
