PsiQuantum Raises $1 Billion in Funding... Largest Ever for a Quantum Computing Startup
Led by BlackRock and Temasek
Nvidia Also Participates
According to a report by the Financial Times (FT) in the United Kingdom on September 10 (local time), quantum computer development startup PsiQuantum has successfully raised $1 billion in funding.
PsiQuantum announced that the newly secured funds will be used to build a quantum computer equipped with one million qubits by 2028. This represents a dramatic increase compared to current state-of-the-art quantum computers, which have only a few hundred qubits.
A qubit is the basic unit of a quantum computer, performing calculations by leveraging properties such as superposition and entanglement in quantum mechanics. Peter Shadbolt, Chief Science Officer (CSO) of PsiQuantum, stated that the quantum computer being developed by PsiQuantum will be able to solve complex problems with commercial value.
With this round of fundraising, PsiQuantum's corporate valuation has risen to $7 billion. The FT explained that this investment is the largest ever raised by a quantum computing startup, highlighting the growing interest from investors.
This funding round was led by private equity fund BlackRock and Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Temasek, with participation from the venture capital arm of Nvidia. The FT assessed that if PsiQuantum's development timeline is realized, the company could surpass Google and IBM, which are currently considered leaders in the quantum computing field.
