Over 500 Million Won Stolen Under Ringleader's Command
Sentencing Scheduled for October 17
Prosecutors have requested heavy sentences for members of a voice phishing ring that operated out of Cambodia.
On September 10, during the final hearing at the Seoul Eastern District Court Criminal Division 11 (presided over by Judge Kang Minho), prosecutors sought sentences for five members of the voice phishing organization, stating, "The damage caused by this organized crime is enormous." They requested 13 years in prison for Mr. Seo, 10 years for Mr. Kim, 8 years each for Mr. Han and Mr. A, and 6 years for Mr. B.
According to prosecutors, the group known as the 'Hanya Call Center' was led by a Chinese national using the alias 'Ma Dongseok.' The organization is believed to have defrauded a total of 527 million won from 11 victims between October last year and April this year. The group operated through seven teams, including the 'Prosecution Team,' which impersonated investigative and financial institutions; the 'Hacking Team,' which installed malicious programs to steal bank accounts; and the 'Romance Team,' which impersonated brothel managers.
The members, who had been operating in Cambodia, were apprehended after briefly returning to Korea due to visa issues. Most of them are reported to be in their 20s and 30s. Mr. Seo, for whom prosecutors requested the longest sentence, is known to have held a managerial role, overseeing multiple members and directing the crimes. The sentencing hearing for these individuals is scheduled for October 17.
