Daewoo E&C Halts All Site Operations After Siheung Accident... CEO Issues Apology
Kim Bohyun, CEO of Daewoo Engineering & Construction, issued an apology on September 10 regarding the fatal accident involving a worker at a housing construction site in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province.
In his statement of apology released that day, Kim said, "Above all, I offer my deepest condolences to the deceased and sincerely apologize for the indescribable grief and pain caused to the bereaved family." He added, "We will fully cooperate with the relevant authorities in their investigation and humbly accept the results." He also pledged to fulfill all responsibilities and obligations to the bereaved family.
He expressed a deep sense of responsibility and remorse for the accident, and announced plans to swiftly implement tangible and effective measures at the site. He stated, "All work at our sites will be suspended, and we will thoroughly review our safety management system from the ground up." He continued, "We will make comprehensive improvements to any deficiencies, and the Chief Safety Officer (CSO) will determine whether to lift the suspension only after confirming the safety readiness of the site."
In addition to conducting special inspections by external experts, the company will intensify on-site inspections during time periods when accidents frequently occur. Unannounced inspections will also be expanded. The company plans to strengthen the approval process for high-risk work plans and reinforce a system in which a safety management supervisor is always present during operations.

The company will increase on-site personnel, including supervisors and safety and health managers. It also announced plans to provide special safety training in cooperation with partner companies and to establish thorough management measures for foreign workers. Kim emphasized, "I will work to establish a site management system that prioritizes safety above all else, with the mindset that every worker on site is like family, so that our workplaces are as safe as our own homes." He added, "We will not forget this incident and will do everything possible to prevent such a tragedy from happening again."
