'30s Progressive' Mamdani Leads New York City Mayoral Polls
NYT Poll: Mamdani Leads with 46% in Multi-Candidate Race
Maintains Narrow Edge in Head-to-Head Matchup
Progressive candidate Joran Mamdani of the U.S. Democratic Party is maintaining a commanding lead over the second-place contender ahead of the upcoming New York City mayoral election in November, according to a recent poll.
On September 9 (local time), The New York Times released the results of a New York City mayoral election poll conducted with Siena College, surveying 1,284 New York City voters between September 2 and 6. Candidate Mamdani led with 46% support, significantly ahead of independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who polled at 24%.
Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, received 15% support, while incumbent New York City Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent for re-election, garnered 9%.
In a hypothetical head-to-head matchup between Mamdani and Cuomo, Mamdani maintained a slight edge with 48% support compared to Cuomo's 44%.
Previously, President Donald Trump commented on the election structure, noting that Mamdani was leading over three other contenders and stated, "I don't think it's possible to win unless it's a one-on-one race," highlighting the need for a realignment of the race.
The New York Times also reported that Steve Witkoff, President Trump's key aide and Middle East envoy, recently tried to persuade Mayor Adams to withdraw from the race by offering him the position of ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The NYT further noted that Trump's associates discussed similar strategies with Republican candidate Sliwa.

Previously little known, political newcomer Mamdani defeated heavyweight politician and former Governor Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor in June. Of Indian Muslim descent, Mamdani has sparked what is being called the "Mamdani phenomenon" by focusing his campaign on improving the living conditions of New York's working-class residents struggling with high inflation. However, some within the Democratic Party have expressed concerns that Mamdani's progressive platform and critical stance on Israeli government policies are excessively radical.
