In the Gangneung area, the rainfall over the past six months has been only about 50% of the average, and as of September 2, the water storage rate of the Obong Reservoir, the main source of household water, has sharply dropped to 14.2%, making it impossible to supply water as usual.
As a result, since August 27, Gangneung City has implemented water rationing by shutting off 75% of household water meters. The government has also urgently declared a "disaster state" to minimize drought damage.
In response, Jeollanam-do purchased 20,000 bottles (2L each) of bottled water produced by a company located in Sandong-myeon, Gurye, and directly transported them to the Gangneung Olympic Museum, which is temporarily storing bottled water to be distributed to Gangneung City.
In 2023, when Jeollanam-do suffered the worst drought damage, Gangwon-do provided bottled water to Nohwado in Wando. This recent support from Jeollanam-do reflects the spirit of mutual cooperation and solidarity.
Back in March, Jeollanam-do also provided relief supplies such as dried seaweed, kimchi, and bread to areas affected by wildfires in Ulsan, North Gyeongsang, and South Gyeongsang.
