Yeongsan River Environmental Office Holds Campaign for International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies
The Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office announced on September 2 that it will hold a public awareness campaign at Gwangju Songjeong Station Square on the morning of September 3 to commemorate the 6th International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, highlighting the importance of improving air quality and responding to climate change. Approximately 30 participants, including officials from Gwangju City, the Southern Fine Dust Research and Management Center, and the Korea Environment Corporation, will join the event.
The International Day of Clean Air for blue skies was first proposed by South Korea and designated as a United Nations memorial day in 2019. It was established as a national commemorative day in 2020. Various events are held annually around September 7 to raise awareness about reducing air pollution and the need to protect clear skies.
This year, the official theme set by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is "Racing for air," emphasizing the global call to action to protect clean air.
The Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office encourages participation by suggesting practical actions such as "walking short distances and using public transportation," "reducing waste emissions to decrease incineration," "maintaining appropriate indoor temperatures and minimizing standby power," and "reporting illegal incineration to 128."
