[Report] Pop Art Blue-Chip Who Overcame Addiction... First Solo Exhibition in Korea on 'Healing and Hope'
Turning Adversity into Art...
The Artist’s Journey in Search of Paradise
Recovery and Healing through Culture and Art:
Leading "Art-tainment"
Upon entering the grand arched entrance, visitors are greeted by three-meter-tall palm tree sculptures and green wallpaper densely covered with banana leaf patterns adorning both walls. On these walls, vibrant pop art pieces depicting the sun, the Himalayas, deserts, and rainbows immediately catch the eye. The paintings, featuring bold red lettering with messages such as "The World is Yours," "You deserve great Things," and "Play the hits," convey bright and positive messages.
On September 1, Paradise Art Space, the indoor art and exhibition venue at Paradise City, a resort complex operated by Paradise Group in Yeongjongdo, Incheon, opened its doors to the first solo exhibition in Korea by Joel Mesler, a pop art artist from Los Angeles, USA, who is considered a blue-chip in the contemporary art world.

This year, the main event is Mesler's first solo exhibition in Korea. Running from September 2 until February 22 of next year, the exhibition will showcase a total of 24 works, including 20 new pieces by Mesler themed around "Paradise" (19 paintings and one sculpture), all characterized by tropical colors and a lively painting style. During the exhibition period, visitors who join the Paradise membership can enjoy free admission.
Turning Adversity into Art... The Artist's Journey in Search of Paradise
The message Mesler aims to convey through his first solo exhibition in Korea is his personal journey of overcoming adversity to seek paradise in life. He was born into a wealthy family, with his father a heart surgeon, but suffered deep wounds when his parents divorced during his childhood. In his youth, he struggled with alcohol and drug addiction, as well as failures as an artist. Mesler explains that his mother's encouragement and love played a pivotal role in helping him overcome these hardships and become a recognized artist, using adversity as creative fuel. "The banana leaf wallpaper reminds me of the patterns at the Beverly Hills Hotel where I stayed as a child, evoking memories of home. The encouragement and support my mother gave me before I slept, and even the scent of her perfume, are reflected in my works," he said, adding, "Ultimately, the theme of the entire exhibition leads back to my mother."
The exhibition space is divided into three main zones: Earth, representing land and soil; Water, symbolizing water; and Sky, inspired by the heavens. The Earth Room features works expressing the beginning of life and the vitality of nature, along with several "flags" symbolizing everything the artist encounters on his journey in search of paradise. The flags bear hopeful messages in English, such as love, mother, you, and me.

The artist describes this space as "representing the quiet and beautiful water encountered after taking the first step on land, establishing a foundation, crossing mountains, and following streams," and calls it "a space for freely imagining and expressing creativity like a child."
The Sky Room, located on the second floor of the exhibition hall, is a space for reflection and realization. It explores the meaning of "existence" as contemplated by the artist in midlife. Against a pale turquoise background, Mesler's new work and the exhibition's signature piece, "Paradise with Blossoms," features the word "Paradise" in gold balloon-shaped letters connected by cherry blossom branches. Mesler explained, "Looking at the cherry blossom branches reminded me of strings tied to balloons. Just as branches connect to flowers, ultimately, every journey is connected to paradise." Visitors can sit on beanbag chairs in the Sky Room, appreciate the works, and reflect on the moment of existence.

Since 2023, Paradise Group has planned major exhibitions to coincide with the opening of Kiaf. In the first year, the company collaborated with Sotheby's, one of the world's largest auction houses, to present exhibitions of Banksy and Keith Haring. Last year, it hosted American contemporary artist Josh Sperling's "Wonder Exhibition," as well as art auction collaborations with G-Dragon and Pharrell Williams, and a live performance by American rapper Pusha T. The aim is to provide a platform for international art collectors and exhibition professionals visiting for Frieze Seoul to interact, while also contributing to the development of Korea's tourism and cultural industries.

This is part of the "art-tainment" philosophy the group has upheld since the 1970s. Art-tainment refers to complex cultural content that combines art and entertainment elements, and through this, Paradise has supported the discovery of emerging artists and invested in nurturing global artistic talent. The goal is to help visitors recover emotionally from the stresses of daily life by combining leisure with culture and art.

Choi Jonghwan, CEO of Paradise, said, "The main themes of Mesler's work are healing and recovery, which align with Paradise City's concept of pursuing healing through art. We will continue to present outstanding exhibitions and provide a stage for emerging Korean artists in the future."
