Commemorating His Distinguished Service at the Saetbyeol Hill Battle During the Korean War
The Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Director: Lee Namil) selects and promotes a "Memorial Facility of the Month" each month to raise public interest in memorial facilities and to foster a culture of honoring veterans in daily life.
The "Memorial Facility of the Month" for September 2025 is the Baek Jaeduk National Defense Hero Award statue, located in Cheonseong-dong (Gadeokdo), Gangseo-gu, Busan.
National Defense Hero Baek Jaeduk was born in 1926 in Cheonseong Village, Gadeokdo. After enlisting in September 1950, he served in the armored regiment of the Capital Division, playing a significant role in the Angang and Gigye battles and the operation to recapture Wonsan. In particular, in September 1953, while serving as a platoon leader during a night ambush operation at Saetbyeol Hill in Geumseong, Gangwon Province, he detected an attack by three enemy companies in advance and fiercely defended his position through hand-to-hand combat and close-range fire until the end.
The victory at Saetbyeol Hill is credited with enabling the allied forces to secure key positions on the central front and stabilize the front lines. In recognition of his distinguished service, Hero Baek was awarded the Taeguk Order of Military Merit. The 50th Anniversary Project Committee for the Korean War selected him as a National Defense Hero and erected a bust in his honor in 2001.
