Gangbuk-gu to Promote Use of Eco-Friendly Banners Starting Next Month
Full Transition to Eco-Friendly Fabric for District Promotional Banners
Establishing a 100% Recycling System for Discarded Banners
Gangbuk-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Soonhee) will begin a full-scale policy next month to replace all district promotional banners with eco-friendly fabric (biodegradable material) and establish a system for 100% recycling of discarded banners.
In May, the district established an institutional foundation by enacting the “Ordinance on Promoting the Use of Eco-Friendly Materials and Activating Recycling of Banners in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul.” This initiative aims to reduce the environmental pollution caused by conventional synthetic resin banners and to lead a carbon-neutral, resource-circulating society.
First, the district will convert all district promotional banners to eco-friendly fabric, taking the lead in expanding usage within the public sector. In addition, two “eco-friendly banner exclusive display stands” will be installed for pilot operation in high-traffic areas-across from Gangbuk-gu Health Center and near Byeoksan Live Park. Only biodegradable banners can be posted on these designated stands.
Discarded banners will be 100% recycled and repurposed into everyday items such as shopping bags, mats, and sacks. Quantities that are difficult to recycle will undergo chemical recycling at Seoul’s collection centers. The district aims to achieve a circular structure with no incineration through this system.
