Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Compile Comprehensive EV Fire Safety Information, "Strengthening Safety"
Prevention, Response, and Follow-up Measures for Electric Vehicle Battery Fires
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia have become the first in the industry to compile and release comprehensive electric vehicle fire safety information, enabling customers to choose and operate electric vehicles with confidence.
On August 27, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia published a blog post on the group’s official website detailing their efforts to ensure electric vehicle safety.
Recently, the electric vehicle market has shown a sharp recovery. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, domestic electric vehicle sales last month reached 25,568 units, a 69.4% increase compared to the previous year, setting a new monthly sales record. Cumulative sales from January to July 2025 totaled 118,717 units, and for the first time ever, annual sales are expected to surpass 200,000 units.
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia explained that they planned this blog content to dispel customers’ vague concerns and to maintain momentum for expanding the electric vehicle market in line with the ongoing recovery in electric vehicle sales.
The blog provides a detailed overview of Hyundai Motor Company and Kia’s efforts to minimize risks and damages at each stage-prevention, response, and follow-up-related to electric vehicle fires, and to ensure customer safety.
In the fire prevention section, the blog introduces key safety technologies applied to Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicles, such as the safety design structure of E-GMP and advanced Battery Management System (BMS) diagnostic technology. It also explains various systems and services that enhance customer safety, including participation in the pilot project for battery safety certification, provision of Connected Car Services (CCS), and the offering of electric vehicle safety inspection services.
The Connected Car Service is provided free of charge for five years upon vehicle purchase. For electric vehicle customers, the “Lite Service” extends safety-related connected features such as SOS emergency dispatch and automatic crash notification for an additional five years. If customers agree to receive the additional service, Hyundai Motor Group electric vehicle owners can use safety-related connected car services free of charge for a total of ten years.
Additionally, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia are offering free regular inspection services for core electric vehicle components for ten years through the electric vehicle safety inspection service.
In the fire response section, the blog covers proactive measures to minimize customer damage, including support for rapid and accurate initial response, early detection of fire signs and automatic notification to fire stations, and the development and donation of special firefighting equipment.
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia believe that rapid and accurate initial response is crucial in extinguishing electric vehicle fires. They are conducting firefighting training using electric vehicles at 241 fire stations nationwide. Furthermore, they have produced emergency response guides containing information such as the location of high-voltage batteries by vehicle model, insulation devices, and emergency power cutoff methods. These guides are available not only on the Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, and Genesis websites but also on public institution websites for anyone to access.
In particular, QR codes linking to the emergency response guide website will be attached to the front and rear windows of electric vehicles such as the PV5, so that critical information can be easily accessed in emergencies.
In the follow-up section, the blog introduces the “Electric Vehicle Fire Relief Program,” which helps minimize unexpected property damage for customers after a fire. This program compensates third-party damages caused by electric vehicle fires, providing up to 10 billion won (approximately 10 billion KRW) in support if the property damage exceeds the coverage limit of the customer’s auto insurance.
