Sejong City Office of Education Finalizes Relocation of Yeondong Middle School by 2029
Relocation of Yeondong Middle School to Dasom-dong Confirmed
School to Move to Public Facilities Complex in 5-2 Living Zone
Expected to Grow into a School with 800 Students
Aims to Ensure Educational Choice and Social Development
The relocation of Yeondong Middle School, located in Yeondong-myeon, Sejong City, was finalized on August 25. Currently, there are a total of 16 students enrolled from grades 1 to 6, and the number is expected to drop to fewer than 10 within the next five years, raising concerns about a possible natural closure of the school.
According to the Sejong City Office of Education, the decision was made to relocate the school to the site of the tentatively named Dasom Middle School in the 5-2 Living Zone, and this was officially announced on August 27.
The plan to relocate Yeondong Middle School to the adjacent 5-2 Living Zone was developed, and the purpose and necessity of the relocation have been continuously explained to the educational community and local leaders. During this process, some local leaders expressed concerns about the relocation.
However, a prior survey conducted among all students and parents of Yeondong Elementary and Middle Schools showed that 91 out of 94 respondents participated, and 87 of them (92.6%) expressed support for the relocation.
An official from the city’s education office stated, "We have finalized the plan to relocate Yeondong Middle School to the 5-2 Living Zone (Dasom-dong) in March 2029, in line with the development schedule. In accordance with the Administrative Procedures Act, a 20-day administrative notice period was held, during which no official opinions were submitted," adding, "Respecting the agreement of the directly affected parties-students, parents, and the educational community-we plan to proceed with the relocation of Yeondong Middle School."
