Gangnam-gu Launches Building Energy-Saving Pilot Project... Forms Consultative Body with Korea East-West Power and Others
Achieving Tangible Results Through Pilot Projects for Apartment Complexes
On August 25, Gangnam-gu in Seoul (District Mayor Cho Sungmyung) signed a joint agreement at the district office with four energy-specialized organizations: Korea East-West Power, Korea Energy Agency, EnergyX, and Kiel Research Institute. The agreement aims to establish a consultative body for promoting building energy efficiency projects and activating ESG management.
According to the district, 81% of Gangnam-gu's greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings. Through this consultative body, the district plans to identify effective reduction measures by combining private and public infrastructure and technology. The significance of this consultative body lies in its commitment to go beyond simple cooperation, by directly implementing pilot projects for apartment complexes that deliver tangible results.
The first project site will be the underground parking lot of Prugio Apartments in Yeoksam-dong. The existing lighting will be replaced with high-efficiency smart LEDs that can be remotely controlled and set in various modes. A system capable of real-time control, management, and data collection will be applied to precisely manage energy consumption. The district expects this to improve power usage efficiency and reduce electricity costs.
Each participating organization has been assigned specific roles. The Korea Energy Agency will provide energy-saving consulting, while the Kiel Research Institute will conduct detailed diagnostics. Korea East-West Power will sign direct contracts with apartment complexes based on the diagnostic results, make upfront investments in equipment, and handle installation and operation. The Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) method will be applied, transferring ownership of the equipment to the apartment complexes after the project is completed. EnergyX will be responsible for providing and constructing eco-friendly building solutions.
