SK Gas and POSCO Holdings Discuss Building a Turquoise Hydrogen Ecosystem

SK Gas and POSCO Holdings held a forum to foster a domestic ecosystem for turquoise hydrogen, a clean hydrogen technology that has been gaining attention.
The two companies announced on the 22nd that they hosted the forum under the theme of "Establishing a Sustainable Economic Turquoise Hydrogen Domestic Ecosystem" at the POSCO Center in Gangnam, Seoul. The event, held the previous day, was attended by representatives from PwC, the Korea Energy Economics Institute, Chungcheongbuk-do, Jeju National University, and other industry, academic, and research organizations. Participants discussed the necessity of turquoise hydrogen and strategies to promote its adoption.

View original imageTurquoise hydrogen is produced by decomposing natural gas at high temperatures to obtain hydrogen and solid carbon, and is characterized by zero carbon dioxide emissions. Presentations at the event highlighted the environmental, economic, and technological advantages of turquoise hydrogen, and emphasized the need for regulatory improvements to enable commercialization. During the panel discussion, participants addressed the importance of creating an ecosystem through government and private sector cooperation, as well as the need to establish a new private consultative body.

SK Gas is investing in companies that possess core turquoise hydrogen technologies and is working to commercialize the technology, while POSCO Holdings is exploring ways to utilize it as a carbon-neutral technology in steelmaking processes. Kim Cheoljin, Vice President of SK Gas, stated, "We will fulfill our responsibility as a comprehensive energy company by connecting our existing LPG and LNG business capabilities to hydrogen and contributing to achieving net zero." Kim Kisoo, CTO of POSCO Holdings, said, "We will accelerate the steel industry's transition to carbon neutrality through turquoise hydrogen production technology linked to steelmaking processes."
