Company Pushes Ahead with Medical Waste Incineration Facility... Mokpo City "Firmly Opposed"
City: "Citizens' Health and Environment Are Top Priorities"
Responding Throughout Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office's Review Process
The city of Mokpo in South Jeolla Province has reiterated its opposition to the installation of a medical waste incineration facility, after the project operator resubmitted the business plan to the Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office on August 8, citing the same reasons as before.
On August 20, Mokpo City stated, "The proposed business plan does not align with the realities of the region and could have a serious impact on the health of citizens and the living environment," expressing its clear refusal to accept the plan.
The city announced that, in the upcoming administrative procedures, it will once again confirm the plan's unsuitability through thorough review, expert consultation, and the collection of residents' opinions.
Previously, on July 24, the Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office rejected the same business plan due to significant issues. At that time, Mokpo City immediately welcomed the decision and, together with citizens and the local community, continued its campaign against the installation.
Regarding the recent resubmission, the city asserted, "Even if identical or similar business plans are repeatedly submitted, we will respond in a principled and consistent manner."
The city expressed its expectation that the Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office will conduct a rational and fair review, while also emphasizing that, in preparation for any possible developments, it will prioritize the health of citizens and environmental protection in all procedures.
