Gijang-gun in Busan Offers Free Year-Round Early Dementia Screening for Residents Aged 60 and Over
Screenings Available at Jeonggwan Public Health Branch and Public Health Center Dementia Safety Centers
Financial Support for Test Fees Provided to Low-Income Residents
Gijang-gun (Governor Jung Jongbok) is conducting free early dementia screening throughout the year to promote early detection and treatment of dementia.
Since dementia can be slowed or its symptoms improved if detected and treated early, the importance of early detection through regular screening is being emphasized.
The Gijang-gun Dementia Safety Center supports free screening for all residents aged 60 and above. Screenings are available at the Dementia Safety Center on the 4th floor of the Jeonggwan Public Health Branch and the Dementia Counseling Room on the 1st floor of the Gijang-gun Public Health Center. Residents only need to bring their ID.
The screening process consists of three stages: a cognitive screening test (CIST), a diagnostic test (neuropsychological test and specialist consultation), and a differential diagnosis (referral to a partner hospital). In particular, residents suspected of cognitive decline whose household income is at or below 120% of the median income can receive partial financial support for the cost of tests when referred to a partner hospital.
If a resident is diagnosed with dementia through the screening and registers with the center, they are eligible for various services, including dementia treatment management expenses and care supplies, customized case management, dementia patient respite programs, and distribution of identification tags for seniors at risk of wandering.
An official from the Gijang-gun Dementia Safety Center stated, "We will actively support our residents so they can continue to live healthy lives without worrying about dementia," and added, "Since prevention and early detection are key, we strongly encourage regular participation in screening."
